Filipinos are passionate when it comes to music, that is also the reason why they were called “Italians of Asia” as they love and appreciate music like the Italian does. Filipinos prefer musical genre that will fits any situation. In fact, they have their playlists for sad and happy times, family, reunions, barkada gatherings and colorful feasts that they can easily play every time this event happens in their lives.

But how does music appeals to our emotion?

Do you know that there are specific parts in our brain that reacts and are responsible for our emotions when we listen to music? These parts in our brain are called prefrontal cortex, parietal lobe and hippocampus. These brain parts are the reason behind the moods and emotion we felt when we listen to music.

Rhythm and heartbeat

Our heartbeat was also affected with the rhythm of the music we’re listening to. When we listen to sad and slow music, our brain signals our body that something sad and depressing is happening and it also makes our heartbeat relax.

On the other hand, our heartbeat intensifies when we feel excitement from the fast rhythm music we’re listening. This explains the connection of music to our brain to feel that certain emotions.

Neurotransmitters and emotions

Neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers which can affect different processes and function inside our body.  A good example of neurotransmitters are dopamine and serotonin which set-off positive emotions. Our brain signals the release of these two neurotransmitters when we listen to upbeat music or our heart beats with excited rhythm.

This explains why some professionals use musical therapy to treat their depressive disorders. This is also the reason why we got affected when we listen to sad or hugot songs when in reality we’re not really brokenhearted. That’s the power of music, it affects us more than we realize it.

Lyrics and Meaning

Most of the time we love a certain song not only because of its tone but also because of the message it conveys. We were motivated when we hear inspirational songs, love songs give us butterflies, biblical songs stir up a heart of worship and rock, heavy metal express intense emotions. Also, music often helps us express and voice out our feelings that we cannot express by actions and words.
