Is your kid addicted to playing games and watching video on mobile phones and television? Does he/she spend more time in front of the screen than with his/her toys?

Kids nowadays, spent more hours using their electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets, ipods and even television. Since they use it everyday, some of them are wired and tired, depressed, moody and have sleep problems. Parents should control their kids from spending so much time in using and staring at the glowing screen of their electronic gadgets. They should also warn their kids that staring at the screen for a long period of time has negative effect in their brain development.

List down below are the things that may happen if you will not control you kids screen time:

1. Screen time affects focus, behavior or social skills

Mood Swings is one of the common negative effects of screen time which can also disturbs your kid’s focus, deep thinking and organization. Screen time also affect how your kids handle conflicts, make eye contact with you or with someone and the way they read social cues. It can lead to bigger problems maybe in your child’s friendship or romantic relationships.

2. Screen time Disrupts sleep, The body clock, and the Reward System of the Brain

Screen time have a huge effect on our child’s brain development, behavior and overall health. Spending too much time on playing games or watching videos on electronic devices may lead to overproduction of dopamine. Neurotransmitter is a type of chemical in our brain which play an important role in numerous bodily system and function. These bodily system and functions are learning, sleep, movement, mood, attention and memory, and overproduction of dopamine can overuse the reward pathways which reduce sensitivity to the neurotransmitter. If the neurotransmitter decreases its sensitivity it affects your child’s level of concentration, motivation, feeling and behavior.

Screen time also delayed the release of melatonin, a type of hormone produced in the brain and essential in maintaining circadian rhythms. If the release of melatonin is delayed, it will cause disruption of your child’s body clock, hormonal imbalance, brain inflammation and prevents them to achieve deep sleep that is necessary for the healing of their body.

3. Screen time also triggers stress in kids

Our human body and brain can handle some stress, however, too much stress can also bring negative effects in our brain. There are activities where our brain interpreted as a form of stress like the screen-based activities or the things we do in our electronic gadgets. This activity provides high levels of stimulation and modifies the hormones in our body that results to stress. It also modifies the chemistry in the human brain which can increase your child’s level of moodiness and irritability. 

4. Screen Time makes kids lazier, keeps them away from nature, and overloads the brain

Kids who spent a lot of time on their electronic gadgets, have no time for some physical activities and no time to expose themselves to nature. According to Stephen Kaplan, a researcher form University of Michigan, your child can decrease stress, aggressiveness, improves their mood and restore attention by involving themselves on some physical activities and spending time interacting with nature.

5. Light-During-Night can cause serious depression

According to studies conducted by San Diego State University’s researchers, a lot of negative effect of electronic screens develops when your child spent more than one hour on the screen at night. It produces bright light that activate special cells in the eyes of your kids that could increase the rates of depression, anxiety and the risk of suicide on younger kids. This bright light also affects your kid’s brain center for learning, mood and memory.

A lot of visual and cognitive input occurs when our children consumed a lot of their time on electronic gadgets, which cause their mental energy to depletes. It decreases their ability to focus and consider the things around them. Some of them are mentally tired because they charge their energy levels for a short period of time and end up getting easily annoyed and angry.
