Do you have an aratiles tree near you? If you do, what commonly happens to the fruit? Aratiles fruit is not a fruit often craved by many people. Generally, it is ignored and left rotting on the ground. However, a student from Iloilo City, Philippines discovered something groundbreaking, and it’s not something that would be ignored.

ARATILES AS A CURE

Aratiles or Sarisa fruit is probably a part of most childhood days. It is a cherry-like fruit found in the Philippines and Mexico.

Maria Isabel Layson, presented her research of aratiles at the International Science Fair in the United States. While her impressive work did not win in the competition, this grade 11 student still thinks it was a blessing and an honor to represent the country.

She stated, “I did not join the competition for fame. I joined this research competition because I wanted to address the problem of diabetes and how my research of aratiles could help solve that.”

According to her research, aratiles contains bioactive compounds like anthocyanin, flavonoid, and polyphenol. Apparently these components of aratiles can cure Diabetes. She stated, “Actually, the results of the study on Muntingia Calabura or the Sarisa, it does contain anti-diabetic properties and it is very rich in antioxidants.”

She shared that she had a dream about a cure that can fight a disease that’s widespread among most Filipinos, and it was what motivated her to look into the anti-diabetic properties of aratiles.

She stated, “Nobody pays attention to the fruit and its medicinal properties. They don’t realize that it has the potential for becoming the regulator of diabetes.”

However, she won the National Science and Technology Fair in February and recently went to Arizona to compete as part of the Philippine delegation in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Her groundbreaking research can finally cure diabetes which according to the Department of Health, is one of the most deadliest diseases in the country.
